The story of the trick

“Google Underwater” (sometimes “Google Gravity Underwater”) became a viral search alongside Google Gravity in the early 2010s — fan-made physics demos of the Google homepage hosted on mirror sites. The underwater version added buoyancy: instead of falling, elements float with a gentle wave motion, and searching was rewarded with fish swimming across the results. Google never made it official, which is why it survives on pages like this one.

How buoyancy is faked on a screen

Three ingredients: a slight upward acceleration (the opposite of gravity), a sine-wave nudge so pieces bob rather than rise in straight lines, and heavy damping so throws die out like moving through water. Add rising bubbles on a loop and the illusion is complete — your brain fills in the rest.
