Zerg Rush — Play the Classic O-Invasion Game

Zerg Rush game — defend the page from falling O invaders

Zerg Rush was Google’s 2012 playable easter egg: search the phrase and a swarm of letter O’s dropped from the top of the page, eating your search results while you frantically clicked them away. Google retired it years ago. Ours is fully playable — each O takes two hits, and the swarm speeds up. Good luck:

Where “zerg rush” comes from

The name is StarCraft slang. The Zerg faction can produce cheap attacking units absurdly early, and flooding your opponent with them before they can build defenses became the game’s most infamous strategy — the “zerg rush”. The phrase escaped StarCraft and now means any overwhelming swarm attack. Google’s 2012 tribute turned the search page itself into the victim: the O’s (from the Google logo) were the swarm, your cursor was the defense.

How to play (and score higher)

  1. Hit Start the rush. O’s spawn from the top at random positions and speeds.
  2. Click or tap each O twice. First hit stuns it (it darkens and shrinks), second destroys it — same two-hit rule as Google’s original.
  3. Don’t let any O reach the bottom. One breach ends the game, GG appears, and your score is final.
  4. Prioritize the fast small ones. Speed varies per O; the small quick ones breach first. Big slow ones can wait.

The original’s best detail

When Google’s version ended, the surviving O’s regrouped and spelled “GG” — good game, more StarCraft etiquette. We kept the GG tradition in our game-over screen. The original also let you share your score to Google+, which tells you how long ago it was retired.

More playable classics

If swarm defense is your thing, Dino Run is pure reflex-jumping, and Snake is the calmer classic. The retired-eggs museum continues in our Google Easter Eggs.

Does zerg rush still work on Google?

No — Google retired the playable version. Searching it now returns normal results plus nostalgia articles. Our version above is fully playable.

Why do the O's take two clicks?

That’s faithful to the original: every O had two hit points. One click stuns, the second destroys.

What does GG mean at the end?

‘Good game’ — StarCraft (and now universal gaming) etiquette typed when a match ends. Google’s O’s spelled it out; we kept the tradition.

Does it work on touchscreens?

Yes — taps count as clicks, and the O’s are sized for fingers on mobile.

What's a good score?

Breaking 25 means you’re keeping up with the speed ramp. Past 50, you’d have survived the original’s full rush.
