The defaults don’t work — now what?
If the factory login is rejected, someone (you, your ISP, or whoever set up the router) changed it. You have two options:
- Check the sticker. Many modern routers ship with a unique random password printed on a label on the device — not the generic “admin”. Look there first.
- Factory reset. Hold the recessed pinhole reset button for about 10 seconds until the lights blink. This wipes all settings and restores the default login from the table above — but it also erases your WiFi name, password and any custom setup, so you’ll reconfigure from scratch.
Change the default immediately — here’s why
Default passwords are public knowledge (this very page proves it). Any device on your network — or an attacker who gets in — can open your router with admin/admin and take control. The moment you’re logged in, change the admin password to something unique, and while you’re there, set a strong WiFi password too. It’s the single most important home-network security step, and it takes two minutes.
Finding your router’s IP
Not sure which address to use? On Windows, open Command Prompt and type ipconfig — the “Default Gateway” line is your router. On a Mac, it’s in System Settings → Network → Details → TCP/IP as “Router”. On a phone, tap your connected WiFi network and look for “Gateway” or “Router” in the details.
What is the most common default router password?
admin/admin is the most widespread, used by TP-Link, Linksys and Asus. Netgear uses admin/password. Newer routers increasingly ship with a unique password printed on the device instead.
What do I do if the default password doesn't work?
It was changed. Check for a unique password sticker on the router first; if that fails, factory-reset the router by holding the pinhole button ~10 seconds to restore defaults.
Where is the reset button on a router?
It’s a small recessed hole, usually on the back or bottom, labelled Reset. Press it with a paperclip and hold ~10 seconds until the lights flash.
Should I change my router's default password?
Absolutely — immediately. Default logins are public, so leaving them makes your network trivially easy to take over. Set a unique admin password the first time you log in.
How do I find my router's default IP address?
Windows: run ipconfig and read Default Gateway. Mac: Network settings → Details → TCP/IP → Router. Phone: WiFi network details → Gateway. It’s also on the router’s sticker.
