Rules in 30 seconds
- Seven columns are dealt, sized 1 to 7, top card face-up.
- On the columns, stack downward in alternating colors: red 6 on black 7, black 5 on red 6.
- Aces go up top to start the four foundations; build each up by suit to the King.
- Tap the deck to draw when stuck. Only a King can move to an empty column.
Strategy that separates winners
Always prefer the move that turns over a face-down card — hidden cards are the whole game. Dig into the larger piles first, don’t rush cards to the foundations (you may need that red 5 on the board later), and never empty a column unless a King is ready to take it. Played this way, draw-1 Klondike is winnable roughly 4 games in 5; played greedily, closer to 1 in 3.
A short history
Klondike is named after the 1890s Yukon gold rush, where prospectors supposedly played it between digs. Like Minesweeper, its modern fame is Microsoft’s doing: Windows Solitaire (1990) was written by an intern to teach mouse drag-and-drop, and quietly became one of the most-used programs ever shipped. Google added its own playable version in search — one more classic that lives a click away.

Should I always move Aces up immediately?
Aces and 2s, yes. From 3 upward, check whether the card might still be needed on the columns before sending it to the foundation.
